Choosing to Raise Your Hand

When I was a sophomore in high school, I had a different Spanish teacher than I’d had previously.  Of course the class grade was broken down into exams, homework and participation like any other class.

When that first report card came, I saw the first B I’d ever seen on one of my own.  It was Spanish.  This was such a surprise and disappointment that there was a meeting with me, my Dad, and the teacher.  I didn’t raise my hand so I didn’t get any points for participation.  She offered to let me give her a signal when I wanted to raise my hand, so she knew to call on me when I felt comfortable.

I knew the answers.  Though I can’t fluently speak Spanish, the classes always came easily to me even in college.  I aced the tests.  In college I tutored other students.  I just didn’t raise my hand.

I’m shy and I’m introverted.  I’d rather sit quietly, knowing the answer, and write it on a test when the time comes.

To this day, I still can’t believe that I’ve given countless presentations, have countless conversations with perfect strangers on a daily basis, have difficult discussions with patients and walk into rooms full of people to discuss a patient care plan.

Just know that you’ll find your voice and you’ll raise your hand once you find your path or your calling.  You’ll raise your hand when it matters, when it really matters.

This may be for an exam or more importantly, for a patient.  There’s a tenet of a high reliability organization that if you see something concerning, you say something.  This encourages accountability and quality care.  These are moments that matter so remember to speak up when it counts.

Consider yourself the sleeper.  A sleeping giant that may be quiet right now, but once awoken by passion and calling — watch out!

It’s kind of like being an underdog.  Everyone loves an underdog story!  You’ll find your calling and speaking up will feel more purposeful once you do.  You’ll have a reason to use all that knowledge you have inside your head.  Then, your success will speak for itself.
